Sylvia’s interest in Chinese medicine began more than 25 years ago. She completed her acupuncture training (Lic Ac) in 1992 studying at the College of Traditional Acupuncture and subsequently undertook post graduate training in different methods of acupuncture in China, Vietnam, Europe and Japan. She qualified in Chinese herbal medicine (Kanpo) in 1996 and was one of the first UK practitioners to train in Toyohari acupuncture (2001), a style of acupuncture originating in Japan. This method has been described as ‘no needle’ acupuncture and is particularly suitable for individuals who are wary of needles because non - insertion needle techniques are used. In addition to ‘Five Element’ and ‘TCM’ acupuncture Sylvia is a specialist Japanese acupuncture methods including Shonishin (Japanese acupuncture for children). Sylvia has a BSc in Psychology (University College London); an MSc in complementary therapy studies (University of Westminster) and a PhD in health sciences (University of York). Prior to training in acupuncture Sylvia had experience of facilitating an NHS psychotherapy group. Sylvia was one of only nine UK complementary therapy practitioners to receive a personal award from the National Institute of Health Research. Her doctorate research was on acupuncture for depression and she has published on this subject in academic journals. Sylvia has extensive clinical experience of working with a wide range of patients in different clinical contexts. She has worked in various complementary therapy clinics (Clapham Common Clinic, The Natural Health Service); for the NHS (The Belgravia Surgery); in community projects such as The Stress Project in Holloway and The Hoxton Health Group (for the over 60's); with drug and alcohol users (The Core Trust, The Angel Drug Project); at The Traditional Acupuncture Centre in Waterloo, and in the corporate sector at the BBC world service.

PhD in health research. Trained in five different methods of acupuncture in the UK, China, Vietnam, Japan and Europe. Her training has encompassed specialised acupuncture techniques and herbal medicine formulae for many health conditions including treatment of different types of pain, digestive problems, sleep problems, skin conditions, mental and emotional issues, fertility issues, women’s health problems and working with illnesses where stress or trauma are contributory factors.
