Dr Peter Chan graduated from Southampton Medical School in 2002 and began his medical career in surgery before moving into general practice, where he found a passion for holistic, personalised patient care. This journey naturally led him to Functional Medicine, a discipline that complements general practice by focusing on the root causes of illness rather than symptoms alone.
Functional Medicine is a highly rewarding approach, allowing measurable and meaningful improvements in patients’ function, wellbeing, and quality of life. It seeks to understand how and why illness develops, and works to restore balance by addressing each individual’s unique combination of root causes, triggers, and perpetuating factors.
This approach is particularly valuable for chronic conditions, where conventional healthcare often struggles to provide lasting solutions. Conditions that may benefit from a Functional Medicine approach include (but are not limited to):
· Diabetes and obesity
· Cardiovascular disease and risk reduction
· Fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome
· Joint pain and arthritis
· Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
· Menstrual disorders and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
· Anxiety and depression
· Chronic cystitis and cholecystitis
· Eczema and psoriasis
· Functional neurological conditions
· Menopause-related symptoms
