What is Bowen Technique?

The Bowen technique is often called Bowen Massage, although it is helpful for all areas of the body, it’s not strictly massage in the sense we would normally assume.  The Bowen technique works on the science of the connective tissues in the body. The connective tissue provides stability in our bodies with the ‘bands of material’ joining one surface in the body to another.  When stimulated through the touch of the therapist, it sends messages to the brain.  Those neural connections then engage with nerve cells to respond to the touch and make changes through the body. Bowen therapists move [...]

Gut Matters

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness month, so our Nutritionist Clarissa Nolan has kindly written a little bit about this disease and what we can do to try and prevent it. The Facts Cancer Research UK says that bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK.  It is the fourth most common cancer in the UK in that 1 in 14 men and 1 in 19 women are diagnosed with bowel cancer. 4 out of 10 cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 75. BUT, we don't want to worry you!  Early diagnosis leads [...]

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – Client Perspective

One of our hypnotherapists, Debbie received this email from a client who had been undertaking the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) programme. It tells a story which is typical of many of the IBS clients Debbie works with at York Natural Health.   Debbie tells us more about her work with IBS. I managed 16 days in a row without a single diarrhoea attack! Not only is that the longest period recently but it's also the longest in the ten years that I've been afflicted with IBS. I've since had a couple of minor relapses, but they have been exactly that - minor [...]

There's some interesting facts and information about keeping ourselves hydrated that [...]

How to Stay Healthy During Spring

Our resident Acupuncturist Nicky Thomas has been sharing tips and information about how to stay healthy during Spring. Based on Chinese philosophy, each season has a particular quality.  Spring is recognised a being a time   "when the warmth of the sun returns and life pushes forth with great vitality". Healthy Diet The liver will benefit from a de-congesting diet rich in green leafy vegetables.  Apple cider vinegar is beneficial too because of its sour taste and nutritional benefits.  In general, think green, as well as light, nutritionally-packed and easily digestible, as this will maximise your energy for growth, just like plants [...]

Feel Happier — one small change at a time

We talked to Jenny Gilmour about Feeling Happier as part of International Day of Happiness this year. Several weeks ago I was helping out my elderly Mum and Dad at the cafe in a local supermarket. On this particular occasion, for various reasons, it was all rather tricky.  A young Mum in the queue in front of us chatted briefly and then went off to do her shopping with her young son. Whilst my parents and I were sitting drinking our coffee she came over and gave us a lovely bunch of flowers. "When I remember it I still smile"   [...]
