Client Reveals How She Overcame IBS with Hypnosis

One of our hypnotherapists, Debbie received this email from a client who had been undertaking the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) programme. It tells a story which is typical of many of the IBS clients Debbie works with at York Natural Health.   Debbie tells us more about her work with IBS.

I managed 16 days in a row without a single diarrhoea attack! Not only is that the longest period recently but it’s also the longest in the ten years that I’ve been afflicted with IBS.

I’ve since had a couple of minor relapses, but they have been exactly that – minor – because by comparison with how things have been for years, they have been either a single episode or a few episodes over a single day, so nothing to worry about, relatively speaking.

I’ve been listening to the CDs in the recommended sequence as well and have been finding them very helpful indeed. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it has been to allow myself to be hypnotised, as I was healthily sceptical at the outset, but sceptical nonetheless.

I’ve found the process deeply relaxing and have had to try quite hard on occasion not to fall asleep at the end. That said, when I’ve listened to them first thing in the morning, I’ve found myself full of energy and raring to go with my day.

All in all, I think it’s fair to say that it is proving a real success for me.

Thank you.

Sceptical

Clients often start off being very sceptical and don’t want to get their hopes up. Perhaps they have had a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for many years, have tried everything else and now they are at the end of their tether. I’m often referred to as the last resort by clients who don’t hold out much hope for things to get better for them.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms

When clients arrive they may have been experiencing a variety of symptoms including: diarrhoea, constipation or abdominal pain, (sometimes constant, sometimes intermittent) nausea, excessive wind, bloating, vomiting, fatigue, anxiety, backache and headaches. These symptoms are excessively draining on a person’s energy reserves, restricting their day to day activities and enjoyment of life.

Hypnosis

Many people are initially suspicious of hypnosis; hypnosis is a very natural state of deep relaxation; it generally feels pleasant, like being half awake and half asleep.  In the first session clients experience hypnosis for themselves, most are surprised at how calming it feels as I gently guide them into a state of deep relaxation.

IBS programme

The structured hypnosis programme I offer at York Natural Health was developed by Michael Mahoney in Warrington. The programme has been used by him for over 20 years and claims a success rate greater than 70%. I have found that clients who fully participate in the sessions and commit to listen to the CDs every day generally report very good results. In addition clients tell me that listening to their hypnosis CD becomes a part of their day that they look forward to.

Addition of EFT

In the second session I like to introduce clients to EFT tapping; a blend of talk therapy and gentle tapping on acupressure points which calms the stress response. This is a really useful addition to the hypnosis programme and helps clients to clear past traumas as well as being a fantastic tool to use with day to day upsets, worries and challenges. Working with EFT in the sessions and using the hypnosis CDs / MP3s daily at home is proving to be a particularly popular and effective combination.

Important note

Before deciding to embark upon this hypnosis programme it is important that your GP rules out other possible causes of your symptoms and that you have a diagnosis of IBS.
